....take the time to determine how your business, or businesses, are listed in Directory Assistance. We have received a number of calls over the last several months from customers who have had concerns over their company listing, or lack of listing, in Directory Assistance. There are generally two sources that may affect how your company is listed.
First, a little background:
There are two major National Database compilers in this country. Both provide an excellent, high quality product and parse the data they receive to maximize retrieval on DA platforms. Both also source their data, on a daily basis, from all LEC’s, IXC’c, CLEC’s, anyone providing phone service in the U.S. They do not, however, source data from individual businesses or residences. Therefore, if you find your listings are incorrect at the national level, they are most likely incorrect at the local level also, since the data going into the national database is all sourced at the local level. So one place to look to correct your listing is with your local carrier, and make sure they feed your listing to the national compilers the way you want it to appear.
The most common problem we are finding now with data, is with businesses that switch their service to VOIP providers, and the VOIP provider has made no arrangements to get their serviced listings included in either a local or national DA database. As soon as you switch your service to the VOIP carrier and discontinue your service with the LEC, your listing is pulled from the database, via a disconnect order sent out by the LEC. Before finalizing your selection of a VOIP carrier, you should find our what arrangements they have made to get your listing included in DA. This is a key way for consumers to locate businesses and you don’t want to be left out!
